What does a Forward Deployed Engineer actually do?

I work inside your context instead of behind a ticket queue. That means sitting with the people who will use the system, understanding the messy reality of your data and existing tools, then building and shipping the software myself - discovery, prototype, production deployment and handover, without passing the problem between three teams.

How quickly can you get something working in front of users?

Accepted Answer

Usually a working prototype on your real data within the first week, after two to three days of discovery. It is deliberately narrow - one workflow, end to end - because a running slice tells us more in a day than a specification does in a month. Production hardening typically follows over the next two to six weeks.

Can you deploy into our own cloud or on-premise environment?

Yes. I containerise with Docker and ship through GitHub Actions CI/CD into AWS, Azure, DigitalOcean, OVH Cloud or your own VMs, with PM2 for process management where that fits. If data cannot leave your environment, the models and pipelines run inside it - including self-hosted LLMs.

What kind of AI systems do you build?

Production LLM systems rather than demos: agentic and multi-agent RAG over customer documents, embeddings and vector search with retrieval evaluation, fine-tuned open models, and self-hosted deployment. I have published my own 1.1B model (VENSA) in GGUF format and built Clonify, a multi-provider AI SaaS with a full RAG pipeline.

How do you handle unclear or shifting requirements?

I expect them. Scope on this kind of work is discovered, not received - so I build in slices, put each one in front of real users, and let their reaction reshape the next one while changing direction is still cheap. Success metrics are agreed up front so we can tell progress from motion.

What happens after the system goes live?

You get runbooks, architecture documentation and walkthroughs so your engineers can operate and extend the system without me. I have onboarded developers onto systems I built (cutting ramp-up time by around 50%) and would rather leave a team that owns the thing than a dependency on me.

Question 7

Do you work across the full stack, or specialise?

Full stack by necessity. A single engagement usually touches a React or Next.js web app, a Flutter mobile client, Node.js or FastAPI services, PostgreSQL and vector storage, an ETL pipeline, and the deployment that carries all of it. Being able to move across those layers is what makes the forward deployed model work.
